The Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts is kicking off summer with an epic tone as they presented the 25th Anniversary of Yanni: Live at the Acropolis on Sunday, June 10th. Stopping in Costa Mesa for a one-night show, Yanni produced an awe inspiring performance for long-time fans and newcomers alike. Reflecting fondly on his memories of playing at the Greek Parthenon, Yanni invited the audience into an intimate, emotional, and sensational experience. A thoughtfully orchestrated playlist purposefully induced a sense of blissful nostalgia and included a mix of deeply moving and powerful pieces. Along with his eleven-piece orchestra, Yanni brought to life masterful favorites such as “One Man’s Dream,” “Until the Last Moment,” “Standing in Motion” and “Keys to the Imagination.” A particular stand-out piece featured an operatic rendition of “Nightingale.”
Through it all, Yanni demonstrated his attention to connection; he fostered a communicative style with the audience, playfully introduced his band, and shared his experiences of touring around the globe. Altogether, Yanni conjured the feeling of an informal and friendly jam session, to which all were encouraged to attend. Coupled with the beauty of the Segerstrom theater and an energetic and engaged audience, the celebration of Yanni’s world-reaching accomplishments was the musical event of the Summer!
