Letter from the editor

The holiday season is approaching and so is the New Year, 2011. Life keeps going and what we do with it depends on us.

I have noticed that in countries with a slower work rate than ours, they are making people aware of the need to slow down, to relax, and not to stress out too much, in order to improve their quality of life. Maybe we should also evaluate what we do every day, to find out what is important and what is disposable, so that we can reduce some of the weight that overwhelms us and does not allow us to enjoy more important things in life.

The Outstanding Personality of this edition, Silvia Pule, very sensible and kind, quotes a phrase from Charles Swindoll’s book, Attitudes, that she instilled in her kids and constantly shares with her teachers: “I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… We are in charge of our attitudes.” With this proportion, we should be able to become aware of our paradise here on earth. And all this applies to everyday life, now that we understand that we cannot blame fate, even though it is easier not to be accountable for what we do.

Let us make an effort to avoid our defects and bad habits; mood is very important, since it can determine the tone of your day and that of the people around you; use effective tricks to calm down—take a walk, I’m sure you’ll feel much better after 10 minutes—, there are many alternatives that can keep you calm and away from unbalancing anyone else’s day. To calm down, think over, and then act seems a very effective way for us to avoid setbacks and to live more at ease. Additionally, let us try to remember and be thankful for how fortunate we are, all we have, and all we can give back and share. A thankful person is a happy person that radiates happiness all around her/him. That should be one of our roles in life: create an environment of love to spread it to everyone next to us.

The outside world is usually an environment out of our control, but we can have control over our personal world. With all positive thoughts and good will, I wish you a wonderful Christmas and a better New Year for us to walk together joyfully through 2011.
